What is a Prosthesis?

A prosthesis is a rehabilitative device that replaces a missing limb and helps you return to walking and independent functioning as much as possible.
The prosthesis is customized for each person, according to their medical condition and level of functionality. It is provided according to the procedures and guidelines of the Ministry of Health, through the Lewis Institute, which operates under Ministry of Health regulations.

Who is a Prosthesis Suitable For?

A prosthesis is intended for individuals after the amputation of a lower or upper limb who require a rehabilitative device for:

  • Daily functional rehabilitation
  • Returning to stable and safe walking
  • Participation in sports activities

The fitting is done individually based on a medical and functional evaluation.

Who is Eligible for a Prosthesis?

Eligibility for a prosthesis is determined according to the Ministry of Health’s Rehabilitation and Mobility Devices Procedure (hyperlink), and includes, among others:

  • Adults and children eligible for rehabilitation
  • Work accident victims
  • Victims of hostile acts
  • War victims
  • Additional populations according to law and guidelines

Eligibility also includes prosthesis renewal, replacement parts, and consumables – according to criteria.

How is the Prosthesis Acquisition Process Conducted?

The process is clear and structured, step by step:

Step 1: Receiving a Referral from a Health Maintenance Organization
Receive a referral from an orthopedic or rehabilitation doctor with a medical summary and explanation of the amputation reason.

Step 2: Functional Assessment (AMP Test)

For any request for a new prosthesis or joint replacement (knee or foot), an AMP – Amputee Mobility Predictor – test must be performed.
The test is conducted by a physiotherapist and determines your functional level.
Important: A prosthesis not suited to your functional level can be dangerous and may cause falls.

Step 3: Scheduling an Appointment at an Authorized Clinic

Book an appointment through the Lewis Institute scheduling center at the clinic closest to your location.
During the appointment, you will be evaluated by a licensed doctor or physiotherapist.

Step 4: The Clinic Appointment

Bring your medical summary from the referring doctor and AMP test results.

During the appointment, the following is assessed:

  • Your general medical condition
  • Condition of the residual limb
  • AMP test results
  • Your level of function and mobility

At the end of the appointment:

  • You will receive an explanation of the options suitable for you
  • A computerized prescription with prosthesis specifications is created
  • You will be asked to sign a commitment for an additional check (second signature)

Step 5: Receiving Notification and Choosing a Workshop

After the appointment:

  • You will receive a text message with an order number
  • A link to a list of authorized workshops
  • You must choose a workshop and send them your order number.

The choice of workshop is entirely yours.

Authorized personnel (doctor/physiotherapist) are not permitted to recommend or direct you to a specific workshop.

Step 6: Workshop Appointment

At the workshop:

  • Initial meeting and residual limb assessment
  • Taking a cast measurement (required for all new prostheses)
  • Building the prosthesis socket and fitting other components

Several appointments may be required to achieve optimal fitting.

Step 7: Trial Period

After receiving the prosthesis:

  • Use the prosthesis for at least two weeks
  • If there is any discomfort, even mild – return to the workshop for adjustment

Step 8: Prosthesis Approval (Second Signature)

  • After the trial period, an approval meeting takes place:
  • In-person at the clinic or By sending a video according to instructions

During approval, fit, walking, and satisfaction with the prosthesis are evaluated.

How Will You Know if the Prosthesis Fits You?

A properly fitted prosthesis:

  • Requires at most one sock
  • Can be worn independently
  • Causes no pain, chafing, or persistent redness
  • Feels stable and safe while walking

If in doubt – contact your treating professional.

What Happens if You Are Not Satisfied with the Prosthesis?

  • The workshop is responsible for adjustments for six months.
  • If the residual limb size changes – a new prosthetic socket can be requested.
  • In exceptional cases, you can appeal to a senior professional committee.
